Due diligence and risk for volunteering

Updated on October 6, 2026

Before your employees volunteer, you can check that a non-profit host meets your requirements.

Check public liability insurance

  • Non-profits can add their public liability insurance details to their profile.
  • You can see these details on the non-profit’s volunteering opportunities and on their profile.
  • This is a new feature, so not every non-profit has added their insurance details yet. Message them to confirm, or to request to see evidence of their liability insurance.

Look for non-profits funded on ActionFunder

  • Non-profits marked Funded on ActionFunder have been funded through the platform before.
  • They’ve already passed ActionFunder’s due diligence checks for funding.

Message the non-profit host

  • Click Message organiser on any volunteering opportunity to contact the non-profit directly.
  • Use this to ask for documents you need before volunteering goes ahead, such as a risk assessment or a copy of their insurance.
  • Currently you can only message a non-profit from one of their volunteering opportunities, not from their profile.
  • Volunteers can also message organisers before signing up.

Approving volunteers

  • Non-profits review and approve every volunteer request before it’s confirmed.
  • Some arrange a short introduction call first, especially for skilled volunteering.

After volunteering

  • Volunteers and the non-profit both complete an impact survey once volunteering is complete.
  • Volunteers can use the survey to report if something didn’t go well.
