Assignments and event-based opportunities

Updated on October 6, 2026

There are two types of volunteering opportunity. The label on each card tells you which one it is.

  • Assignment: a piece of ongoing work you deliver, or a role. These tend to be skilled volunteering opportunities.
  • Ongoing or One-time: an event on a set date and time. These are usually non-skilled.

Assignments

For example, building a website or planning a social media calendar.

  • You work to your own schedule, often over a longer period, sometimes with a finish-by date.
  • There are no sessions to pick. You suggest the hours you can give when you apply and agree them with the organiser.
  • Log time against the assignment as you go.
  • When the work is done, mark it complete yourself.
  • Then complete the impact survey.

Event-based opportunities

For example, clearing a garden on a Saturday morning.

  • Events run on a set date and time. Ongoing events offer several sessions to pick from, but you sign up for a single date. For example, a community garden looking for volunteers every Thursday: you sign up for the Thursday that works for you, and if you want to come again you sign up again.
  • Choose a session and click Request [date]. Cards show how many spaces are left.
  • Once approved and the date has passed, the event is marked complete automatically.
  • You and the non-profit are then sent an impact survey.
