How project matching works

Updated on July 24, 2025

ActionFunder is designed to take the legwork out of connecting businesses and funders with grassroots community projects. One of the platform’s key features is automatic project matching, which helps you discover projects that align with your fund’s goals.

What is project matching?

When you create a fund on ActionFunder, you’ll define specific criteria – such as location, focus areas, organisation size, and types of beneficiaries. Once your fund is live, the platform uses this information to automatically match your fund with live projects from non-profits that meet your criteria.

These matched projects appear in your dashboard under your project match list for the fund. You can review, shortlist, and make funding decisions directly from there.

Two types of matches

  1. Auto-matches aka reactive
These are projects that are already on the platform and meet your fund’s criteria. Non-profits are notified when their project is matched with a fund and encouraged to update their project if needed.
  2. Direct applications aka proactive
Once your fund is live, non-profits that meet your criteria will also have the opportunity to apply directly by submitting a project to your fund. You’ll typically see an increase in direct applications as your fund nears its closing date.

Can I reject a project?

Yes! You have full control over which projects you fund. If a matched project isn’t a good fit – for example, it’s outdated or doesn’t align with your goals – you can reject it. The non-profit will be notified, and you’ll still have access to other matches and incoming applications.

How do I know if a project is relevant?

While ActionFunder prompts non-profits to keep their projects up to date, we also encourage funders to use their local knowledge and judgment.
